چکیده

A wild, adult, male common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) presented to North Carolina State University's Turtle Rescue Team (TRT) with injuries consistent vehicular trauma. Injuries included head trauma an associated superficial lesion of the and overpronated left forelimb a necrotic wound on palmar surface. Osteomyelitis localised was considered primary differential based radiographic findings clinical signs. To treat osteomyelitis, regional antibiotic limb perfusions were conducted approximately once per week. After conducting seven total perfusions, patient's ambulation mentation improved significantly there no progression osteomyelitis repeated radiographs. The patient released wild after 5 months under human care. This case report demonstrates potential use perfusion as adjunctive therapy for in chelonians.

Local antibiotic therapy in osteomyelitis.

The local delivery of antibiotics in the treatment of osteomyelitis has been used safely and effectively for decades. Multiple methods of drug delivery have been developed for the purposes of both infection treatment and prophylaxis. The mainstay of treatment in this application over the past 20 years has been non-biodegradable polymethylmethacrylate, which has the advantages of excellent eluti...

Duration of intravenous antibiotic therapy for children with acute osteomyelitis or septic arthritis: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND There is little current consensus regarding the route or duration of antibiotic treatment for acute osteomyelitis (OM) and septic arthritis (SA) in children. OBJECTIVE To assess the overall feasibility and inform the design of a future randomised controlled trial (RCT) to reduce the duration of intravenous (i.v.) antibiotic use in paediatric OM and SA. Treatment of Severe Alopecia Areata Using Methotrexate as an Adjunctive Drug in Combination with Intravenous and Oral Corticosteroid

Background: Alopecia areata is one of the most common human autoimmune disorders and its severe types are refractory to all conventional therapies. Corticosteroids have been used in severe alopecia areata since 1950s but there is concern over complications caused by high doses of corticosteroids. Methotrexate has been used as an adjunctive therapy in some autoimmune disorders and has been propo...

A Novel Candidate Gene for Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination in the Common Snapping Turtle.

Temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) was described nearly 50 years ago. Researchers have since identified many genes that display differential expression at male- vs. female-producing temperatures. Yet, it is unclear whether these genes (1) are involved in sex determination per se, (2) are downstream effectors involved in differentiation of ovaries and testes, or (3) are thermo-sensiti...

Evaluation of intravenous regional perfusion with amphotericin B and dimethylsulfoxide to treat horses for pythiosis of a limb

BACKGROUND Treatment for horses with pythiosis of a limb is challenging. This study aims to evaluate the effects of administering amphotericin B in a 10 % solution of dimethylsulfoxide by intravenous regional limb perfusion (IRLP) to treat horses for cutaneous pythiosis of a limb. RESULTS All 15 of the horses treated had complete resolutions of their lesion between 6 to 9 weeks after a single...
